Interpretation of “Coral tear” by Thanos Anestopoulos
For this entry in the series, I have picked an emotional song titled Coral tear from the solo collection of songmaker Thanos Anestopoulos: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kOTQ4Lf0e38.
Thanos was a member of the band Diafan Krina. Roughly two years ago, I wrote an interpretation of one of their songs: https://protesilaos.com/interpretations/2024-06-29-krina-idle-days/.
Coral tear preserves some of the melancholy that characterises the work of Diafana Krina, which makes me think that Thanos was the soul of the band.
At any rate, this is a wonderful piece with inspiring lyrics. Below is the Greek text, my faithful translation of it, and further comments.
Coral tear
Singer: Thanos Anestopoulos
Lyrics: Thanos Anestopoulos
Music: Thanos Anestopoulos
Look to dress well
winter has come, take another sip
I have stored for you a hug
and a tiny paper boat
Look at the faint light on the walls
I am the shadow smiling at you
Run to the town and set a fire
I shall be beside you wherever you go
Look to build a nest
and there to hide a bit of sun from the past
I have stored for you a sea
and a tiny coral tear
Look at your hand, they have endured a lot
Cast away your darkness and look up high
Stay in the desert within the fire
I shall be beside you wherever you go
I imagine the poetic first person as a guardian figure. It is the one who cares deeply about the wellness of the poetic “you”. The guardian appears to be reminding the unnamed second person of its own moments of respite, of its achievements, and its innate capacity to be hopeful.
In the song, hope is represented as feelings that can be stored, the past which persists as a matter of choice, and even the teardrop which may solidify so that it is not lost.
The titular coral tear is the symbol of this hope. In that which is ephemeral, the tear, it identifies the potential for permanence. Perhaps this cannot be done: teardrops do not transform into corals. Maybe impermanence is all we experience, though one can still reason about transcendence and thus the poet employs the metaphor of the teardrop to remind us of what we can at all times fathom.
Hopeful is the person who does not rush to early conclusions. Do not say “this is impossible” when you cannot have a definitive answer. Let the tears flow in earnest, as you accept impermanence. The honesty of your experience may leave such an impression on you that permanence no longer seems alien: it stays with you and it defines you thenceforth.
I suspect many a poet employs “you” as a proxy for their self. We can interpret Coral tear along those lines as well. Sometimes we need to remind ourselves to take it easy, to not fixate on what is troubling us, to recognise that hope remains with us and that we have the potential to think of our case anew.
As I have implied in cryptic fashion in my publication Welcome to my world, which is your world (2026-09-06), the creator cannot share the totality of their world with anyone. If my creativity is a fountain whose waters flow downstream, you may trace everything back to the source, at which point you find that the spring comes from the depths of the mountain. You are so close to the source, yet forever away from it.
In the innermost world of the creator, at the depths of this loneliness, hope manifests as a belief in the possibility that someone attracted to it, someone who has had another taste of those waters, can align their mind perfectly with the creator’s. Only then the two are one.
Should that happen, however, the creator has not found another: the you is the I and the distinction collapses into itself.
